Safe Homes, Safe Pets
"The dad who comes home and kicks the family dog is probably just warming up." This slogan used by the Washington Humane Society depicts the relationship between animal abuse and domestic violence. Currently, animal welfare organizations, law enforcement agencies, and domestic violence centers around the country are banding together in recognition of what is commonly called "The Link", and indisputable tie between cruelty to animals and violence toward humans. In a 1996 study by the La Crosse Wisconsin Community Coalition Against Violence, 80% of women seeking domestic violence services reported that that had witnessed their partners' maltreatment of pets. Another survey of 101 battered women reported that 20% of the women delayed leaving their abuser out of fear that a pet would be harmed if they were to do so. (Ascione, 1997). This statistic has inspired TurnAround, Inc. to develop a new program, "Safe Homes, Safe Pets".
"Safe Homes, Safe Pets" was developed with the mission of sheltering animal victims of domestic violence, so that adults and children in abusive homes can seek shelter with the knowledge that their pets will be safe. This program is the product of a partnership with The Humane Society of Baltimore County, the Snyder Foundation for Animals, and the Baltimore County Domestic Violence Coordinating Council.
We are currently seeking volunteers to serve as temporary foster families, veterinarians who might offer their services, and donations of animal food, supplies, and sponsor funds. If you would like more information about this program or would like to help, please contact
TurnAround at 410.377.8111.
